California is the most expensive state for divorces

Californians notice when they leave the state that prices can be higher than many other places. Higher taxes support the infrastructure of the Golden State, and many types of transported or imported goods have a premium as well. But one homegrown thing in California is the most expensive type in the country.

A report shows that California beats New York as the most expensive state in the union for divorce. Although the divorce rate has dropped from half to 46 percent in the last decade, it still affects many people and can even ruin some of them financially for years.

A divorce for childless spouses in Los Angeles or San Francisco runs about $2,000 above the national average, costing around $17,500 per decree. Couples with children can expect to pay more for legal fees during child custody hearings and family court dates, with an average of $26,300 per decree.

More than 9 percent of Californians have been divorced at least once, so many people have had to pay out for their walking papers. Some people try to save money by representing themselves, but this can often lengthen the process. Many also lose out on long-term benefits from a smarter divorce.

Anyone facing a divorce process, with or without the complications of child custody, deserves the best chance possible at an easy recovery. An attorney can help advise on the right process for divorce for you, including mediated settlements or collaborative options that lower the risks of adversarial issues. An expense now can save more expenses and bad emotions down the road.
